Selkie Freedom can help you recover your data from one laptop or PC and recover the data in priority to what is most important to you. Whether you are upgrading to a new computer and need to migrate your data from your old machine to the new one, or your old computer will no longer even boot up and you need to rescue critical data: Selkie Freedom can help.
Selkie Freedom plugs into your computer, and runs its own Operating System (independant of Windows) on the USB key. It allows you to transfer data most important to you through Smart File Finder straight onto the USB key. What gives Selkie Freedom such a huge advantage over other disk recovery tools is that it doesn't rely on the Windows OS on the computer. It completely bypasses Windows, so that you don't have to rely on the Windows to be operational at all.
No. Selkie doesn't even install onto the old or broken computer at all, so it leaves no trace behind. Selkie Freedom operates from a bootable USB key rather than installing itself onto the hard drive of the old or broken computer.
Because backups alone are not enough! Even if you back up every day there are always active projects that you are working on that you will need recovered. Having Selkie Freedom on-hand will ensure that the data is safe even if Windows no longer works. It is easy real-time data recovery
No, Selkie Freedom is not a forensic recovery program. Selkie's focus is dealing with the much more common problem of the Blue Screen of Death - helping you get around that to grab intact data. If the computer is truly dead - it will no longer power up or the hard drive is physically damaged - Selkie Freedom will not be able to help you.
You will need the Selkie Freedom USB key, and the computer you are trying to recover data from. If you're motherboard does not support booting from USB, you will also need the Selkie Freedom Boot CD. That is all!
No. Norton Ghost is limited and only lets you create images of workstation systems to make restoration easier. To create initial images, you need to have Ghost running within a working Microsoft Windows operating system; you cannot create a backup image if Windows has failed. Selkie Freedom is designed to run even on systems where Windows has become corrupted because it does not depend on Windows in any way.
LapLink's PC Mover requires installation on both the old and new computers, while Selkie Freedom doesn't require any installation at all. Additionally, PC Mover requires that Windows works and is in good condition; this is not often the case with an older computer that needs its migration moved. PC Mover will not work at all if Windows doesn't work. Selkie Freedom will work - even if Windows doesn't!
Selkie Freedom may allow you to copy virus-infected files. For this reason you should make sure you have up-to-date virus protection on your working computer before you transfer files back to it.
Selkie Freedom works with Windows 98/ME/2K/XP/Vista - it will move files from any one of these Operating Systems to another. Since Selkie Freedom operates on a bootable USB key, it doesn't even require that the copy of Windows works at all.
Although Selkie can in some instances recover from mirrored set-ups, RAID is not currently supported by Selkie Freedom.
Yes! Selkie Freedom includes a Boot CD which will enable you to boot to the Selkie Freedom USB key if your motherboard will not.
The ability to boot directly from a USB key is a limitation of a computer's motherboard. Many manufacturers have started to provide support, however, if it is not available on your motherboard you will require the included boot-CD to run Selkie Freedom. If you are uncertain, you can find your boot devices and the boot order within the BIOS. To enter the BIOS (usually F1 or the DEL key - check user manual for additional options), select Boot Order, and select USB-FD(floppy disk) or USB-HDD (disk storage). Save settings and reboot. If you have both USB-FD and USB-HDD options, try USB-HDD first. If your computer still does not boot to Selkie, select USB-FD. If you are using the Boot CD instead, select the CD-ROM drive you will be booting from as the first device to boot.
Selkie will only detect the Ipod as a storage device on certain models of Ipods. We currently cannot support the newest generations (Iphone, Ipod touch, and newest Ipod Classic) which run requiring PTP support. However, older generations acted as a usb mass storage device, and Selkie Freedom should be able to detect it as a drive and pull the data from it.
